The emblems of Madagascar

The maki of Madagascar, the zebu of Madagascar, the indri indri of Madagascar are animals that represent the island of the Indian Ocean. They are associated with the image of the island.

What are the meanings of these emblems? What are their symbolic representations? What are the armoires of the red island? These are just some of the questions we’ll be looking at here. In this short article, we tell you everything.

Symbolic figures representing a singular thing, emblems make it possible to identify the object they represent. Here, we show you some of the elements that can be used to identify a country, namely Madagascar.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at the images and animals that can be found everywhere when people talk about Madagascar. We have listed 6 Malagasy symbols and emblems for you. Each symbol has its own special meaning.

The maki of Madagascar.

The maki is a symbol that represents Madagascar in the tourism industry. It is endemic to the island and can be found nowhere else on the planet; it survives naturally on the island. The maki symbolises Madagascar through disguises, masks and clothing. However, it is not very present on the island of Madagascar as an everyday symbol.

The term maki refers to several mammals belonging to the lemur genus. It features in many of the characters in the eponymous films Madagascar by Eric Darnell and Noah Baumbach.

It is also the emblem of Madagascar’s rugby team, with the team bearing this animal as its name.

The baobab.

The baobab is a widespread African emblem that generally symbolises mating. It is found in Zambezia, Senegal and Burkina Faso. In Madagascar, contrary to common belief, the tree is more associated with the ancient spirit than with copulation. The baobab is also associated with tourism. It symbolises travel and exploration.

The baobab is found in the south and west of the island. In Morondava, there is the baobab alley where you can admire the tree over a distance of 19 km. It takes between 20 and 30 years to reach adult size.

The tree flowers from November to December and also represents wisdom.

The zebu head.

The zebu is an animal specific to Madagascar, found throughout the island, from north to south. The zebu is a symbol of power and solidarity.

It can be found on the island’s official documents, as well as on certain state establishments. This emblem can be seen, for example, on coins, banknotes, administrative documents and Malagasy army documents. The symbol is a flattened zebu head adorned with its two horns.

This zebu head is also found in sport. The national football team wears this emblem on its pennant, and it is also the team’s nickname.

The traveller’s tree.

The traveller’s tree can be found in many of Madagascar’s landscapes. The tree covers the whole island. The traveller’s tree signifies knowledge and abundance. The tree can be seen on administrative documents and stamps on the island of Madagascar.

In addition to administrative documents and stamps, the traveller’s tree is found in the emblem of Madagascar’s polytechnic school, and in the logo of the island’s national airline.

On the island of Madagascar, we like to think that the traveller’s tree has a thousand and one uses. It is used to build huts, and its flesh is sometimes used as food. And the island’s inhabitants have long suggested that the water hidden within it is drinkable, a sign of the versatility attributed to the tree.

Another detail about this plant is that it is more of a stipe than a tree. But we’re not too sure about that either, so go and check for yourself.

General Government of Madagascar.

Rounded red ornament bearing the letters G,M,G,D. This emblem was the symbol of the Malagasy General Government between 1897 and 1958. The logo represents the island of Madagascar, the Comore archipelago, the sparse islands archipelago, and the austral or Antarctic islands.

The capital of all the islands included in the archipelago is Tananarive.

The territory was governed by General Gallieni.

Coat of arms of the Imerina Kingdom.

Blue emblem with a giant bird in the centre, and a star and green leaves decorating the whole. The logo of the Imerina Kingdom is the symbol of the Imerina Kingdom. It represents the jewels of the Imerina. The Imerina kingdom is made up of the island of Sainte Marie, Diego Suarez and Nosy be.

Created in 1817, 300 years after the arrival of the first Europeans, it was abolished by the arrival of Gallieni in 1897.

This is the list of symbols that represent the island of Madagascar. You will find them near Malagasy administrative documents or near certain private organisations when you visit the island. The fervour of the Malagasy people for their country is important, so if you visit the island, you may come across one of these symbols hanging from the windscreens of cars, if not the Malagasy flag.
