10 reasons why we don’t travel

Travelling is one of the most popular forms of recreation throughout the world. It is practised during holidays, school breaks and long weekends. However, despite its popularity, travel doesn’t always win everyone over; it remains an activity for the privileged and sometimes frightens the general public. In this article we will come back with you to the reasons why we do not travel, we will see with you the 10 reasons for not traveling.

1- Travel budget

The first reason for not travelling is the budget: travelling is expensive, especially if you don’t do it properly. Last-minute travel arrangements, poorly organised trips, travelling without information – these are just some of the reasons why the cost of travel soars. A standard 15-day organised trip costs around $1,400 per person for a tour of Africa (excluding flight prices), $1,300 per person for a 15-day trip to Latin America (excluding flight prices), $1,800 per person for a 15-day trip to Asia (excluding flight prices), and $1,700 for a 15-day trip to Europe (excluding flight prices). (Prices are low estimates excluding meals, including accommodation, breakfast and one activity).
The cost of travel is a significant cost, and we rank it as the number one reason for not travelling in this ranking.

2- Lack of time

The second reason for not travelling in this ranking is lack of time. Travelling requires time to get to the destination and time to get back to the place where you live. This is generally a day for the outward journey and a day for the return journey, two days that are included in the time allocated to the trip and that can sometimes be a barrier to travel.
What’s more, travelling in itself is a time-consuming activity. For short holidays, the choice to travel is one that requires good organisation. For long holidays, choosing to travel is a quest in which time plays an important role.

3- Fear of means of transport

Aerophobia, aviophobia, thalassophobia, amaxophobia, fear of air, fear of flying, fear of water, fear of vehicles – these are all fears that prevent people from travelling. According to a study carried out by MAPFRE (Amaxofobia – Fear of driving – 2005), 33% of the population suffers from this phobia.
Fear of means of transport can be a major obstacle to travel, and there is no alternative to transport anxiety disorders other than confronting them.

4- Economic patriotism

Economic patriotism means buying from a company of your own nationality. It consists of favouring local workers and jobs to the detriment of the principles of free trade and “capitalist competition”. This is not a new phenomenon; taken to its extreme, it pushes individuals to avoid letting foreign currency flee to other lands by travelling.
Economic patriotism does not rule out travel altogether; there is a way of travelling that demonstrates economic patriotism, which consists of promoting regional tourism and allowing people to travel to neighbouring towns or cities further afield.

5- Laziness to travel

“Laziness is the root of all evil” is a famous Christian quote, and it is no exception to the rule when it comes to travel. In this ranking, laziness is the 5th most common reason for not travelling. In fact, our survey on the subject revealed that laziness is responsible for almost 10% of people not travelling.
As with any ailment, it can be combated, for example, by awakening people to travel, by learning more about travel and its benefits, or by first short-distance trips.

6- Misanthropic attitudes to travel

Travelling means discovering new landscapes, new places, new people and new cultures. With this in mind, we thought it appropriate to rank misanthropy as the 6th reason for not travelling. It’s a ranking that we’ve put together to suit us. Just like laziness about travelling, misanthropism is a reason for not travelling because it rejects a large part of what travel has to offer.
Being a person who refuses to socialise with others is a reason not to travel because it is also aversive to travel and discovery.

7- Fear of others

Different from the misanthrope, fear of others is one of the reasons why people don’t travel. Fear of others is characterised by apprehension about other people’s cultures and misunderstanding of their customs. Fear of the other is a lack of knowledge of what is foreign and a fear of discovering it.
It is a reason for not travelling that we rank 7th in our ranking.

8- Fear of a change of scenery

Not a very common fear, but one that does exist, the fear of a change of scenery is one of the reasons for not travelling. Fear of change of scenery is the fear of changing environment, and is by definition a major reason for not travelling.
When it occurs in an individual, it can add to stomach aches, nausea and other physical problems. It is a form of Hodophobia and is recognised as a physical disorder by medical bodies.

9- Travel congestion

Travel congestion is another reason for not travelling. Travel bottlenecks generally involve preparing luggage, preparing administrative documents relating to the trip, and preparing for the trip itself.
These are small steps involved in the journey, but which can be daunting for some. They are ranked 9th in this ranking.

10- Health incompatibilities

Sanitary incompatibilities are the lack of facilities in a given location to meet a particular medical need. This could be a lack of ramp for the disabled, lack of electricity, lack of air conditioning, etc. This is a rare reason for not travelling, but one that is often avoided by choosing other places to visit, hence the last place in this ranking.
