The little grebe

The little grebe is a member of the Podicipedidae family. The species is adapted to life on and under water. It is a bird of ponds, pools and marshes. It is the smallest representative of the grebe family; it takes its name from the chestnut.

The bird is present in Europe, Asia and Africa. Its scientific name is Tchybaptus ruficollis; it is derived from the Greek takhus “fast” and bapto “to sink”. 

The grebe is a good swimmer. It has legs located at the back of its body, giving it better dexterity when in contact with water. The marsh bird has a full appearance, it measures between 21 and 29 cm. Its head is rounded, its ears are lobed and its beak is black. 

The little grebe is a species of piscivores. It feeds on larvae and adult insects between 5 and 11 cm.
